Lola Maury

Lola is a dance artist interested in the investigation of movement expression to paint the images of people and human behaviours. She enjoys sourcing her ideas from naturalistic movement to then develop it into more elaborated and abstract images and metaphors. She explores movement as a medium to create physicalized characters.
Choreographically, she focuses on exploring the combination of different artistic languages as a way of achieving a multi-layer impact on the audience. She creates on stage visual and poetic paintings to drive the audience into a journey of emotions.

Lola has recently developed a special interest for improvisation in performance context as well as the strong sense of collaboration, commitment and group awareness that improvisation for performance requires in order to communicate with the audience. She enjoys developing her consciousness of body states, thoughts and feelings in every moment as a source of stimulus and spontaneity.

Lola’s work is influenced by a multi-cultural training in contemporary dance and ballet techniques, as well as a strong background in improvisation, contact, and voice studies. She trained in Paris and Madrid, where she grew up, before graduating from London Contemporary Dance School in London. She keeps on deepening her research in movement and theatre by undertaking diverse workshops including solo improvisation with voice and movement with Andrew Morrish and Action Theatre technique with Kate Hilder and Sten Rudstrom.

From 2007, Lola has been collaborating as dancer and choreographer with the theatre based company Vocal Motion Elastic Theatre, touring in France, Italy and the UK. She has been offered to present her own works at diverse choreographic platforms such as the Blueprint Festival 2008, the Shiobhan Davies Graduate Platform 2008 and the IX international Dance Festival of La Havana.
Alongside her work for HitchhikeDance Collective she is co-founder of Tied By Thumbs, a dance improvisation group.
